Ep 50: “How to protect the bank of Mum and Dad”
Our goal with 3 Minute Tech is to provide quick and to the point videos to explain sometimes technically challenging topics in simple and easy to understand language.
2025 proved again to be a year of resilient global economic growth and strong returns for risk assets. However, it certainly didn’t feel that way in early April as we all grappled with what President Trump’s Liberation Day meant for economies and markets. As it turned out, however, the worst tariff scenarios were avoided as Trump walked back from initial tariff levels, and importantly there were strong tailwinds for the US and global economies. Interest rates continued to be cut as inflation stabilised, and record levels of capex were invested in AI and technology. Highly stimulatory fiscal US deficits were continued if not increased with the passing of the OneBig Beautiful Bill (OBBB) by the US congress.
As we shift into 2026 one of the biggest challenges is thinking through where we are in the cycle, and how much risk and credence we should attach to the highly unconventional Trump administration.
We thought we would flash back to our episode with Anthony Kiernan AM, the now former Chair of Pilbara Minerals, who also recently stepped down from his role as Non-Executive Chair of Genesis Minerals remaining on the Board as Lead Independent Director.
Tony is a highly respected and highly regarded, 35+ year veteran in the management and operation of listed public companies and has many highlights from a wonderfully impressive career.
Tony provides some seriously fantastic insights into his career and his observations including the deal making with Saracen such as buying 50% of the Kalgoorlie Super Pit, the mighty lithium growth story – and the challenges – when he commenced as Chair of Pilbara Minerals in 2016, his views on the role of a Board and Chair and the challenges of cost inflation and labour in the mining sector.
Tony’s firm belief in the importance of cash flow, dividends and his love of the mining sector and the people involved shines through.
He was awarded a member of the Order of Australia for his significant service to business and the community which says it all.
